Lost Lives Never Forgotten

Lost Lives Never Forgotten : Greville Kelly

This cross marks the site where 11 brave WW2 airmen and two civilians lost their lives in 1948 above Glossop at Higher Shelf Stones. The men were aboard the Boeing Super-fortress Bomber. It was left to the RAF's Mountain Rescue team to locate and find the bomber, and recover the bodies of the 13 deceased. Aboard the plane were the $7,400 wages for the Burtonwood Airbase where the plane was heading, which survived the crash and were found by American Military Police.
