Abandoned Trade

Abandoned Trade : Charlie Valentine

An abandoned white van, a staple of the British tradesman, alone on the Old Cattle Market plot, a stark contrast to the bustling livestock trade here from 1886-1993, the space filled now only with left over remnants of old projects, new trade and the litter of the locals that pass by. This image is part of a series called 'Nottingham: Urban Decline' which explores the neglected and unloved areas of once thriving parts of the urban, industrial landscapes of the city, focusing on discarded objects and mundane scenes that have been lost and forgotten, found on the fringes of Nottingham. The series invites the viewer to reflect on and appreciate the aesthetics of these overlooked artefacts and aspects of urban life. The images attempt to emphasize the city’s decline and rapid loss of commerce in Nottingham’s urban landscape, whilst simultaneously showcasing the beauty that can be found in the subtle charms of a run-down British suburb. The series intends to highlight the issues of underfunding facing the inner-city suburbs of Nottingham. Documenting the decline of the local areas, these spaces, once integral to community and commerce, have been lost to the modern world, now standing abandoned and overlooked
