: Quarries, both ancient and contemporary, make up a significant part of Derbyshire's landscape and were, therefore, a major source of employment. As economies have changed over the last few decades, so have industries, and now for various reasons, many old quarry sites have been abandoned. Some sites have been redeveloped into housing estates or business parks, but for others there is no clear future, and so they remain lost and forgotten.
